How to Strengthen Your Intuition (Your INFJ Superpower)

an INFJ strengthens her intuition

One of the reasons we INFJs have a hard time fully coming into ourselves — and therefore, becoming the best version of ourselves — is we’re unable to connect with one of our major superpowers, our Introverted Intuition (Ni).

It isn’t easy, I agree. I’m an INFJ, one of the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types, and it took me, I would say, about 30 years to truly appreciate and believe in the information that my intuition sent my way. Introverted Intuition, or Ni for short, is the main cognitive attitude of the INFJ. It’s interesting, because our Ni collects all these seemingly random details from the world around us, assimilates them into bits and bytes of properly datafied information, and then is able to pull out astute conclusions that often baffle and stupefy any bystander, due to their accuracy and insight.

How does it do that? For the longest time, I was mystified by its powers. I would know things, without knowing how I knew them. I would make accurate judgements or have explicit insights about individuals or situations around me, and I would have no idea how I came to those conclusions.

For example, I would meet an individual and my spidey senses would start tingling, telling me to avoid this person, and later, I would hear how this individual had swindled money from several of my friends and relatives. Or I would meet a lovey-dovey couple and instantly sense they were on the verge of breaking up, and a few days later, they separated.

I’m not saying that INFJs are mind readers or some magical beings capable of knowing impossible things. I believe it has to do with the inordinate amount of time INFJs spend observing people, things, situations, and life in general. We are highly perceptive, and we are forever observing the movements of the universe.

Eventually, I learned to just let my intuition do its thing. It would send me all this brilliant information, and instead of being afraid of this data and how scarily accurate it was, I now just accept it. I consider myself lucky. This is where I am right now with my Ni.

Instead of Fearing It, Build Your Connection to It

My main preoccupation and obsession nowadays is how I can build my intuition and make it so it’s able to speak to me with more clarity. A lot of times, in the past, I would get information from my intuition, and it would be absolutely convoluted and mixed-up. Not clear-cut. Not precise. It would take a lot of rummaging and sorting to figure out the message.

Thus, I decided it was my responsibility to figure out how to make my intuition stronger, so I could hear the messages it sends my way, the signs and signals, and thus, I can live the best version of my INFJ life.

I wish to convey this message to all intuitive people out there, not only to INFJs, that your intuition is your best friend. It literally is the thing that will help you stay out of trouble and stay above the line. Not only that, it will also give you major understanding about the people and situations around you, which can help you become a better counselor and friend to them. It can even help you succeed at your job, grow your business, and deepen your creative work.

Here are four ways I’ve found that work particularly well for me in building up my intuition and making me a stronger INFJ all around.

How to Build Up Your Intuition

1. Sit in silence and stillness.

The reason sitting in silence is so important to all intuitive types is it culls out the noise and allows us to connect deeper with our inner voice. When we’re out in the world, with all the disarray, chaos, and discord, it’s easy to feel disconnected from our intuition.

It’s also hard to hear the soft whispering voice of our intuition when we’re rushing around, running from one task to another, unable to pay attention to those important messages.

Therefore, I spend at least an hour or so in the early morning silence, before the chaos of my day sets in, to listen to my heartbeat, watch my breath, watch the leaves on the trees outside my window dance in the wind, the birds chirping, and just generally calm down enough to listen to my intuition’s hushed voice.

I’ve noticed that I always end up getting one or two juicy insights during this period of silence — a lot of which help me clear out the clutter in my life and live better.

2. Build a better mind-body connection by doing something physical.

One of the issues intuitive people face is we spend way too much of our time on this planet in our heads, disconnected from our bodies. The easiest way to remedy that and to come back to our body intelligence is to do something physical.

Different activities work for different people. I know some people who love pole dancing as a way of connecting deeper with their bodies. Others use drumming, jogging, or lifting weights. Yet others like the idea of Tai chi or Qigong.

I prefer yoga in order to connect deeper with my body, my intuition, and my deeper self. I wake up every other day, set out my yoga mat, and do a few yoga poses with deep concentration. It helps wake up my body and gets me out of my head, out of the imaginary places in my head, and into my body.

Do you ever struggle to know what to say?

As an introvert, you actually have the ability to be an amazing conversationalist — even if you’re quiet and hate small talk. To learn how, we recommend this online course from our partner Michaela Chung. Click here to check out the Introvert Conversation Genius course.

3. Go into nature, around waterfalls, forests, animals, or Mother Earth’s bounty.

This is a big one for all intuitives, and I know I’ve been terribly remiss in this regard. I know I should spend more time in nature, or at least schedule one nature day into my calendar a week. But because I get busy, getting too deep into my head or my work, I forget, and then I notice the negative effects of it, not only on my psyche, but also upon my intuition.

Human beings weren’t meant to grow up in concrete jungles. We were meant to walk bare feet on the cool, soothing, grounding Earth, and be around life-giving trees, plants, shrubs, and animals. It’s the way human beings rejuvenate themselves, rebuild their connection to their deeper selves, and of course, grow their intuition.

I highly recommend you take this opportunity to get up, stretch your body, and go for a walk in a park or green area somewhere near you. And I will do the same here.

4. Practice your intuition with the small things.

This is something I’ve just recently started doing, and it has been so influential in my quest to grow my bond with my intuition.

A quick example from my life. I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and I spend my days making videos for my YouTube channel and writing science fiction novels. I spend a lot of my free time interacting with many different people from all over the world, including digital nomads and expats who have come to live here for short or long periods of time. This means that I’m forever practicing my intuition upon meeting these individuals. I always ask my intuition if this new person is someone I can trust or not.

I’m not saying that my intuition has all the answers, but a lot of times, if my intuition tells me to stay away from a certain person, I will choose to heed that warning. And usually, it brings positive consequences. This is just one of the few small ways I practice listening to my intuition.

I hope these four tips are helpful to you, and you can implement them in your own life to build this powerful gift that the universe has bestowed upon you — your intuition.
